Casters for Wire Shelves

A caster is a small wheel that swivels, which is what you want if you want to make wire shelving more mobile! If you're lucky, you already got shelves with wheels (If not, I have some recommendations in my wire shelving shopping guides).

Depending on the model of wire shelving that you have purchased, you may be able to find ones make specifically for your manufacturer. But if you can't, have no fear, there are many caster options out there, and one of these may work for you.

For 3/8" and lightweight models (125lbs per caster):

For Honey Can Do Shelving Systems:

Casters for Heavy Duty Shelving (1/2" stems):

Another thing to try is to contact the Manufacturer to see if they can identify which casters fit your unit, and if they have them in stock. For example, if you contact Trinity about their shelving or work tables, they often have casters on hand and sold separately. Please see my post on replacement parts for contact info for other manufacturers, and keep things rolling!

Pretty Wire Shelves

I'm a big fan of Young House Love, and Sherry over there is a big fan of oil rubbed bronze. She's used oil-rubbed bronze spray paint for sofa legs, has a round mirror, door fixtures, and well, you get the idea. Oil Rubbed Bronze is a great color to use for your home decor -- it's not quite as stark as black, and is unique while still staying neutral.

Trinity recently introduced a new product -- an oil-rubbed bronze wire shelving rack! I don't think I've ever seen a product with this mix of sleek color and lots of function. It's NSF certified (meaning that it's rated for use commerically for food) and has a pretty great price point

It's a little hard to tell from this photo, but if you head over to the Amazon page you can see some close-ups that show off this baby's sophisticated color. The product page calls it "chocolate", but this is definitely a nice oil rubbed bronze.

TRINITY 4-tier NSF 36"x14"x54" Wire Shelving Rack - Chocolate / Brown

Product specs:
  • 4 shelves
  • Weight capacity (evenly distributed) / 300 lbs. per shelf / 1,200 lbs. total weight
  • Shelves adjustable at 1" increments
  • 36" W x 14" D x 54" H
It is currently listed for $49.99 plus $22.13 shipping = just shy of $75 for a stylish and functional shelf.

p.s. If you're looking for the oil rubbed bronze spray paint that Young House Love uses, with that handy nozzle, you can find it here. I've used that type before (in another color) and I can tell you, even though I was a newbie, it was super easy!

Trinity Stainless Steel Work Table

I was strolling through my local Costco the other day, and happened on this baby:

I thought to myself, that is a GREAT price -- in case you can't see, that's $124.99 -- and includes casters! Man I love Costco! It got me wondering about how much that table is elsewhere, since I'd seen it around. Who offers the best price?

Overstock sells this same table, with a slightly different configuration -- the Trinity Stainless Steel Table with Casters Kit, great if you'd like a rolling stainless table, and all for $193.64. They also have coupons and specials from time to time, and this is a good place to go if you want wheels on your table. (psst, check out retailmenot for coupon codes)

On Costco.com the current price for the this same stainless steel table is currently listed as $159.99 (with no casters). That's still pretty great, though shipping may kill the deal, and not everyone is a Costco member or lives near one.

Trinity's own website sells this table (no casters) for $159.99 as well, with free shipping!

And last but not least, the same table is available on Amazon (no casters) for $139.99 + $32.01 shipping = $172. But wait, there's more! There are also used versions available in very good condition, for $85 + $32.01 = $117. That's even better than Costco's price, and the description says that any wear or tear is cosmetic only.

Note that all of these tables have the same dimensions and features (except for the one with casters):
  • NSF certified
  • High quality stainless steel construction (table top, shelf and legs all made of stainless steel)
  • Rounded corners and edges for safety
  • Dimensions: 48"W x 24"L x 35"H
  • 300lb weight capacity

In summary:

what you need to get your toolbox started

I currently live in an adorable San Francisco apartment, but it's a rental without much storage space, so I don't really have many DIY projects, or the tools to do much. But I'm totally in love with Young House Love's post on what tools you need, and as I get closer to purchasing a property, I definitely have my eye on that list, along with this mobile toolbox solution.

Fun!

cool things with wire shelves -- Diaper Changing Table

I posted a while back on how to make an aquarium coffee table out of your wire shelf. Well, for those of you who might be looking for a low-cost, super efficient way to rig up a changing table, check out this idea from  oh dee doh and Martha Stewart via 501families:

Wire Shelf Changing Table
First, the shelving has a smaller footprint than most changing tables.
The open shelves also make use of all of your available space. The best part is when you're done with using it as a changing table, it can easily convert into shelving in a closet, pantry, or bathroom.
How cool is that? Trinity's Rolling Utility Cart has wheels that lock, and is the perfect size for use a Standard Sized Changing Pad, with the added bonus of being portable. This wire cart is 36" high, which is in the shorter range for  a standard changing table where the changing surface height is between 38" and 42", so this might be a good choice for petite parents looking for a DIY solution for a changing table.

Tool Boxes for Women

We'll take a break from our normally scheduled "all wire shelving, all the time" programming for another topic related to storage: Tool Boxes for women.

If you search for tool boxes for women, you'll find some interesting products:

The Original Pink Box PB20MTB 20-Inch Steel Tool Box
The Original Pink Box PB218MC 18-Inch 2-Drawer Heavy Duty Metal Box, Pink

If you're anything like me, you want to be practical, not pink! And if you're in the market for a toolbox, you probably have more than what will fit in a shoebox, so you've already outgrown some of these choices.

So even though "pink" is not the answer to your tool storage problem, there are still unique requirements for a tool box for women:
  • Portable - tools are not light, so your storage solution should allow for easy transport
  • Stylish - okay, so if you're like me, style points go a long way in terms of appreciating a product
And beyond that, I think every tool box should be sturdy, have enough compartments to help you stay organized, and if you're like me, you have enough tools that you want a place to organize them, but not so many that half of your garage is your tool workshop.

That's what brings me to what I think it's a perfect choice for a toolbox for women:

TRINITY Stainless Steel 3-in-1 Portable Rolling Suitcase Toolbox
This choice is portable, has sturdy wheels, and has three handy compartments for your tools and supplies. If it's out of stock on Amazon, try the Trinity website. Happy tooling!
